I grew up in Inglewood, California, in a low-income neighborhood where gang-banging, drive-by shootings, drug-dealing, and teenage pregnancies were the norm. I would sleep to the lullabies of cop sirens and helicopter lights chasing suspects in our backyard which, unlike our neighbors, was full of trees and bushes. My father was a gardener and my mother a seamstress. Since my parents grew up in a little ranch in Mexico where they worked as farmhands starting at the age of 5, our backyard looked like a little farm with vegetables, fruits, herbs, and chickens.
Many people sought my mother to give them Vitamin B12 injections. They said she had a “light hand”. I was not allowed in the room to witness the injections, but I would observe how my mother would meticulously fill the syringe and take the bubbles out through the needle. I just thought it was the coolest thing, and I think this is what first sparked my interest in medicine. When we would get sick, my parents would tell me what herbs to get from the backyard so they could create a medicinal concoction that would help alleviate any bellyache, sore throat, headache, insomnia, etc. It was not until I was 5 years old, that the long trips to Tijuana, Mexico, for doctor and dentist visits took a toll on my not being able to watch my Saturday morning cartoons. As I got a little older, I was able to understand that we did not have money, much less medical insurance, to go to a local clinic. This triggered my curiosity in becoming a doctor in low-income neighborhoods to improve the health care disparities that existed in my community.

Crecí en Inglewood, California, en un vecindario de bajos recursos donde las pandillas, los tiroteos desde vehículos, el tráfico de drogas y los embarazos en adolescentes eran lo común. Las canciones de cuna con las que me dormía eran las sirenas de la policía y las luces de los helicópteros persiguiendo sospechosos en nuestro patio trasero que, a diferencia de nuestros vecinos, estaba lleno de árboles y arbustos. Mi padre era jardinero y mi madre costurera. Como mis padres crecieron en un rancho en México donde trabajaron como peones desde que tenían 5 años, nuestro patio parecía una pequeña granja con verduras, frutas, hierbas y pollos.
Mucha gente buscaba a mi madre porque ella ponía inyecciones de vitamina B12. Decían que tenía una “mano suave”. No me dejaban estar en la habitación donde se ponían las inyecciones, pero observaba como mi madre llenaba meticulosamente la jeringa y sacaba las burbujas de aire por la aguja. Eso me parecía lo máximo y creo que fue lo que primero que motivó mi interés por la medicina. Cuando nos enfermábamos, mis padres nos decían qué hierbas traer del patio para ellos preparar menjurjes medicinales que aliviaban los dolores de estómago, de garganta, de cabeza, el insomnio, etc. A los 5 años noté que los largos viajes que hacíamos a Tijuana, México, para ir al médico y al dentista, no me permitían ver mis dibujos animados de los sábados. A medida que fui creciendo, empecé a darme cuenta de que no teníamos dinero, mucho menos seguro médico para ir a una clínica local. Esto despertó mi curiosidad por ser médico en los vecindarios de bajos recursos para mejorar las disparidades en la atención médica que existían en mi comunidad.
