Who is Hippocrates?

… And why are we still talking about him?

Hippocrates is known as the “Father of Medicine”. He was born in 460 BC in Greece. In his time, most people thought that illness was caused by “evil spirits.” Hippocrates was the first physician to study and treat the human body as a whole. He believed in observing the body and diagnosing illness to provide treatments that could help people get better. He established a medical school in Greece to train other physicians and introduced an oath of medical ethics for physicians to follow. To this day, all physicians take the “Hippocratic Oath” when they begin their medical practice. Our program is named for this great leader.

Our history

How It All Began

Hippocrates Circle is a Southern California Kaiser Permanente program designed to motivate under-represented students towards careers as physicians. This community outreach was founded in 2000 at the San Diego Medical Center by Dr. Ricardo Sistos (Family Practitioner at Kaiser’s Rancho Bernardo Medical Facility), Maria E. Torres, and Laarni A. Fontillas (Sales and Account Management, Labor and Trust Funds). Today, there are Hippocrates Circle programs in all medical center areas in the Southern California region.

The Hippocrates Circle program has five interactive events between students and physicians. The first event is an opportunity for students and physicians to share personal experiences and knowledge to achieve a successful medical career. In the second event, students tour Kaiser Permanente medical facilities and experience a day in the life of a physician. The third event is a tour of a college/university campus. Students meet college students, as well as members of the admissions committee, to address questions about higher education. The fourth event is a pathway to high school and beyond the workshop. In this workshop students and parents will learn more about high school classes and college readiness. The program concludes with a graduation ceremony with students, their families, and mentoring physicians. We use this time to celebrate the students’ participation in the program and their goal to pursue a career as a physician.

The Kaiser Permanente Promise
The Kaiser Permanente Promise is a commitment to provide high-quality, affordable, caring and convenient health care in a timely manner for our members and the communities we serve.

Meet our physicians

Kaiser Permanente has a diversity of physicians with training across all medical specialties. Our physicians represent different backgrounds, communities, and have their own personal stories to share.

Physician Champions in each Medical Center service area collaborate with Medical Centers and local school partners to deliver the Hippocrates Circle Program, recruit physician mentors for students, recruit students, and ensure that all students receive the support they need to complete the program.
